Our format, the path we work for, not a promise. Your US page gets a version for the new market, written in the words buyers there search, with their prices and contacts. A word-for-word copy that buyers there don't search is dropped. A search in that market finds the version, and buyers there get in touch. For a US scheduling app entering the UK.

What it is

What is international SEO?

International SEO is the work that helps buyers in each country and language find the version of your site made for them: in their language, in the words they search, with their prices and contacts. It covers research in each market, the setup that tells Google which version is for whom, and the pages that sell, localized first.

One page of a US clear aligner brand entering Germany, and the four things a buyer and Google check:

Translated, not researched

Search terms Translated from the English list

Version shown in Germany The US page, in English

Prices and payment Dollars and US payment plans

Where to get treated Partner dentists in the US

German buyers find a local orthodontist

Researched and localized

Search terms The words German buyers use, from German search data

Version shown in Germany The German page, linked to the others with hreflang

Prices and payment Euros, installments and what health insurance covers

Where to get treated Partner dentists in Germany

A page German buyers find, and a scan appointment your team can see.

Research picks the markets and the words, setup tells Google which version is for whom, and localization makes the pages that sell fit each market. See what the free map shows ↓

Step one

What does the free search potential map show?

One priority service in one new market and language, in up to 2 business days: how much buyers there search for it and in which words, who wins that demand today, whether your site shows them the right version, and a first look at AI answers. Then a 20-minute call with Mike or Alex and one direct recommendation.

Our map format, filled in for a typical US clear aligner brand entering Germany

01 Search demand

How much buyers in the new market search for your products, in their language.

Search demand

Found
What we saw
Steady monthly searches in German for invisible braces and what they cost, such as “unsichtbare zahnspange kosten” and “aligner kosten”.
Why it matters
Demand in a new market is in its own words. A translated keyword list misses most of it.
What to do
Build the German pages around the words German buyers use, starting with the groups they search most.
How we’ll check
In the strategy: every German query in the keyword map, assigned to the one page that should rank for it.

Check it yourself. Search for what you sell in the market’s language. Do the top results use the same words as your page?

02 Who wins it today

Two similar competitors and the search leader in that market, page by page.

Who wins it today

Gap
What we saw
Local orthodontists, a comparison site and one aligner brand hold the top results, with pages on cost, treatment steps and who it suits. Your site doesn’t show for the German queries.
Why it matters
Buyers compare local options first. To be compared, you need a page as clear as theirs, in German.
What to do
Pages in German on cost, treatment steps and who it suits, with your partner dentists in Germany.
How we’ll check
Your German pages in the top ten for the same queries, every month.

Check it yourself. Search your three main products in that language. Who shows up, and with what page?

03 Pages you lack there

The pages buyers in that market look for before they get in touch.

Pages you lack there

Gap
What we saw
The German pages are word-for-word translations: prices in dollars, US payment plans and no word on health insurance. There is no page on what treatment costs in Germany.
Why it matters
Buyers trust an offer that fits their market: their currency, the way they pay, a dentist near them.
What to do
Localize the pages that sell first: terms, prices in euros, installments, what insurance covers, partner dentists and proof. The rest follow in order of demand.
How we’ll check
Rankings, clicks and scan appointments from Germany for each localized page.

Check it yourself. Open your page for that market. Are the prices, payment options and contacts the ones a local buyer expects?

04 Site readiness

Whether your site shows buyers in that market the right version.

Site readiness

Gap
What we saw
Google shows your US page in Germany. The German pages don’t list the US ones with hreflang, and visitors are redirected by location, so Google, which mostly crawls from the US, may never reach them.
Why it matters
Google needs its own address for each version and tags that tell it which one is for whom.
What to do
hreflang on every version, each page canonical to itself, and a language banner in place of the redirect.
How we’ll check
Which version Google shows in Germany, in Search Console, every month.

Check it yourself. Search for your brand on Google in that country. Which version of your site shows?

05 AI snapshot

A first look at what AI answers in that language say about your category.

AI snapshot

Watch
What we saw
Five buyer questions in German on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, run once. You were named in 1 of 15 answers, with your US prices.
Why it matters
AI answers in German draw on German pages. One run is a first look, not a measurement.
What to do
If AI answers matter for how your buyers choose, the SEO and GEO strategy covers both in the same time.
How we’ll check
In the GEO program: a fixed set of buyer questions on seven AI platforms, every month.

Check it yourself. Ask ChatGPT, in that market’s language, who to buy what you sell from. Are you named?

06 The recommendation

One direct answer on what to do next in that market.

The recommendation

Found
What we saw
Go to an SEO strategy for Germany: there is demand in German you can win, and the setup fixes are known.
Why it matters
Every map ends with one recommendation, so you know what to do next, even if it’s to wait.
What to do
One of four: an SEO strategy, an SEO and GEO strategy, fix the site first, or come back later.
How we’ll check
A 20-minute call with Mike or Alex to go through it.

Check it yourself. Could your team publish a page in that market’s language this month?

Every part ends as Found (in place), Gap (missing or broken) or Watch (check again). The map covers one new market and language, and it is yours, whoever does the work. More markets are scoped with the strategy, before work starts.

Site setup

How should your site serve each market?

With its own address for each version, and tags that tell Google which version is for whom. Every version lists itself and all the others, and the links go both ways, or Google ignores them (Google Search Central). Pick your markets, your main one first, then a structure.

Your markets Your main one first

Structure

Easy to set up, and low maintenance on one host. Buyers may not tell the market from the address alone.

Pros and cons as Google describes them. Google doesn’t recommend URL parameters such as ?loc=de.

3 versions Every version of a page carries 4 hreflang tags: one for itself, one for each of the other 2 and an x-default for everyone else. Your pricing page, the same lines on every version: en-UShttps://yourcompany.com/pricing/Main de-DEhttps://yourcompany.com/de/pricing/ en-GBhttps://yourcompany.com/uk/pricing/ x-defaulthttps://yourcompany.com/pricing/ The UK’s code is GB: “en-UK” has no effect on Google Search. The folder or subdomain can still say uk.Two versions in English: each gets its region code, and we give each one what its buyers expect, such as prices, spelling and terms.x-default goes to your English version. Google designed it for a language selector page, so if you have one, point it there. The free map covers one new market: Germany. The strategy covers Germany and the United Kingdom, and every market you add is scoped and priced before work starts.

Four ways to give each market its own address, as Google describes them

Subfolderyourcompany.com/de/Easy to set up, and low maintenance on one host.Buyers may not tell the market from the address alone. One server location.
URL parameteryourcompany.com?loc=deNone: Google doesn’t recommend it.Hard to segment by address, and buyers may not tell the market from it.

The Wonderflow Method

How does our international SEO process work?

In three stages, each with its own result, and after each one you decide whether to go on. The free map covers your first new market, the strategy every market you add. A new version needs time to be crawled and shown in its market, so we judge each market over six months.

Measurement

How do we measure international SEO, and what does one total hide?

Market by market, down to the inquiries each one brings. One total hides a market that stalls behind one that grows, and a version shown in the wrong country. So for each market we agree a set of queries with you, check it every month with the same settings, and report each market against its own start.

The right version

We count
Which version Google shows in each market, by country and page, and the hreflang errors across versions.
We leave out
Clicks to a version from the wrong country, such as the US page clicked in Germany. They go on their own line.
Source
Search Console by country, and a crawl of every version.

Visibility by market

We count
Positions and clicks for the queries agreed with you for each market, in its language, checked with the same settings every month.
We leave out
Brand queries in the headline number, and any average across markets.
Source
Rank tracking set to each country and language, and Search Console. AI answers can take clicks even when a page ranks, so clicks are counted on their own.

Inquiries by market

We count
Quote, demo and contact requests from organic search, by country and landing page, counted once.
We leave out
Spam, duplicates and job applications.
Source
Your analytics and CRM, with the country and the landing page on every request.

Pipeline by market

We count
Opportunities and deals from organic inquiries in each market, where your CRM records them.
We leave out
Deals a partner or distributor closes with no record of the first inquiry. They go on a separate line.
Source
Your CRM. We don’t guarantee positions, traffic or inquiries in any market: the strategy sets a forecast for each one in three scenarios, and every report sets the result against it.

What you get every month

Two pages for the questions buyers in Germany ask most, such as treatment time and partner dentists near them, once your team confirms them.

By market

What do buyers search in each market, and what makes a page local?

Their own words, and the details they expect at home: units, prices, ways to pay and someone to talk to. Even in one language, the UK and the US search differently, and so do Mexico and Spain. Pick a market.

Clear aligners, entering Germany

Buyers search
“unsichtbare zahnspange kosten”, “aligner kosten”: what invisible braces and aligners cost
Google should show
Your German page, marked de-DE, in place of the US one.
What makes the page local
Prices in euros, payment in installments, what health insurance covers, partner dentists in Germany and someone who answers in German.
What counts as an inquiry
A scan appointment with a partner dentist.
What we check first
Whether the German pages are indexed and shown in Germany, and whether a redirect by location hides them.

Google gives more weight to trustworthy content on topics that affect people’s health. Dental marketing →

Shift scheduling software, entering the UK

Buyers search
“staff rota software”, “rota app for shift teams”, where US buyers say employee scheduling
Google should show
Your UK page, marked en-GB, in place of the US one.
What makes the page local
British terms and spelling, prices in pounds with VAT shown, UK holiday and working time rules, and reviews from UK customers.
What counts as an inquiry
A demo request or trial from a UK company in your size range.
What we check first
Whether the UK and US pages list each other, and whether the UK page differs enough to earn its place: prices, terms and proof.

Card payments, entering Mexico

Buyers search
“terminal para cobrar con tarjeta”, “terminal punto de venta”: a card terminal for a shop
Google should show
Your Mexico page, marked es-MX, in place of the page for Spain.
What makes the page local
The Spanish of Mexico rather than of Spain, fees in pesos, the ways people pay in Mexico and what a merchant there needs to sign up.
What counts as an inquiry
A merchant sign-up that passes your checks.
What we check first
Whether the Spain and Mexico pages are told apart with es-ES and es-MX, and whether fees and terms are current for Mexico.

Google gives more weight to trustworthy content on topics that affect people’s money. Fintech marketing →

RV rentals in the US, selling to travelers in France

Buyers search
“location camping car usa”, “camping-car aux états-unis”: renting an RV for a trip across the US
Google should show
Your French page, marked fr-FR, in place of the US one.
What makes the page local
Prices in euros with insurance, mileage and one-way fees spelled out, the pick-up cities, and a contact who answers in French.
What counts as an inquiry
A booking request with dates and a pick-up city.
What we check first
Whether the French pages answer what French travelers compare: insurance, mileage, one-way fees and the price in euros.

Florida real estate, selling to buyers in Brazil

Buyers search
“comprar casa em orlando”, “imóveis na flórida”: buying a home in Orlando, property in Florida
Google should show
Your Brazilian page, marked pt-BR, in place of the US one.
What makes the page local
Answers to what these buyers ask: how a foreigner buys and pays for a home in the US, renting it out when they are away, and an agent who speaks Portuguese.
What counts as an inquiry
A call or viewing request in Portuguese.
What we check first
Whether the Portuguese pages are pages of their own, not a translated menu over English text, and whether the forms reach an agent who speaks Portuguese.

Questions buyers ask

International SEO FAQ

The short answer comes first. Open any question for the detail.

Do we need a separate site for each country? No. A folder per market is often enough.

Google describes four ways to give each market its own address: a country domain, a subdomain, a subfolder or a URL parameter, and it doesn’t recommend parameters. A country domain sends the clearest signal of the country but costs more to run, and each one targets a single country. Subfolders are the easiest to set up and keep everything on one domain, so for a first market we recommend a subfolder. Later markets we settle in the strategy, against your markets, team and budget.

Is translation enough for international SEO?No. Buyers search in their own words.

A word-for-word translation often targets words nobody searches. Localization starts from keyword research in each market, then adapts terms, units, prices, contacts and proof. Google reads a page’s language from its visible text, not from code, so the text itself has to be written for that market.

What is hreflang, and do we need it?Yes, once you have more than one version.

hreflang tells Google which language and country each version of a page is for, so it can show buyers the right one. Every version lists itself and all the others with full URLs, and the links have to go both ways: if two pages don’t point to each other, Google ignores the tags. An x-default covers everyone else.

Should we redirect visitors by location? Not automatically.

Google advises against redirecting people automatically by language or location: it can stop both people and search engines from reaching the other versions, and Googlebot usually crawls from the US. Suggest the right version with a banner, and let people choose.

Do you work with native speakers? On request, quoted separately.

We localize with AI, check the result against local search data and competitors, and review it with your sales team. For markets where the wording decides the sale, we arrange a native-speaker review of the pages that sell before they go live, on request and quoted separately.

Can ChatGPT translate our site for SEO?It drafts. It can’t know what buyers there search.

AI tools translate and draft fast, and we use them for research and first drafts. They can’t see which words buyers in a market actually search, check your prices and terms for that market or hear what your sales team hears there. AI helps. Behind every decision is a person you know by name: a specialist checks every term against local search data and approves every page before it goes live.

How long does international SEO take?Judge each market over six months.

The map takes up to two business days and the strategy three to four weeks for one market. A new version needs time to be crawled and shown in its market, and a new market starts with no history there, so we judge each market’s trend over six months. The strategy forecasts how fast each market can move, in three scenarios.

Can you guarantee rankings in a new market? No.

We don’t promise rankings or a set number of leads. No one can. Rankings depend on search engines, local competitors and how quickly changes go live. We control the work: research, setup, pages and links. The strategy sets a forecast for each market in three scenarios, and every monthly report compares the result with it.

How do international SEO agencies charge?A monthly retainer, a project fee, or both.

Agencies usually charge a monthly retainer, a fixed fee for a project, or both. Ours: the map is free and covers one new market, the strategy starts at $X for one market and language, and every added market or language is scoped and priced before we start. The monthly program starts at $X a month, and its price depends only on the pace.
