SEO for a manufacturer means being found when engineers and procurement teams search by part, process, material or standard. Those searches are small in volume but one RFQ can be a large order, so the work is capability and application pages with the specs in the text, a catalog search engines can crawl, and measurement in qualified RFQs rather than traffic.
What SEO means for a manufacturer
Industrial buyers rarely search for a company. They search for a part, a process, a material, a tolerance or a standard: “titanium CNC machining”, “hygienic pressure sensor 316L”, “AS9100 sheet metal supplier”. Each of these long-tail searches is small, but the people behind them are engineers and procurement teams with a real requirement and a sales cycle measured in months.
So the goal is not traffic. It is qualified visits that turn into RFQs from the customers you want: the right industry, volume and lead time.
- 60%of the buying process happens online, on average, before technical buyers engage with sales.
- 79%of engineers name datasheets among the most valuable content when they research a significant purchase.

The page types that win industrial searches
Most manufacturer sites have a home page, an about page and a products page. Industrial searches land on something narrower. These are the page types that match how engineers and procurement teams search.
| Page type | Example search | What the page must show |
|---|---|---|
| Capability | five-axis CNC machining titanium | Machines, materials, tolerances, part sizes, volumes and lead times |
| Application | pressure sensor for food washdown | The problem, the specs that solve it, approvals and a similar example |
| Material or process | 316L stainless laser welding | What you can do with it, limits, finishes and test methods |
| Industry served | medical device contract manufacturing | Standards, quality system, typical parts and the decision-makers involved |
| Certification | ISO 13485 machine shop | The certificate, its scope and audit date, and what it means for the buyer |
| Product or part | HS-20 pressure sensor datasheet | Part number, specs in the text, datasheet and CAD, and where to buy |
Catalog and product-data SEO
Catalogs are where industrial sites lose the most search value. The specs sit in PDFs, the part pages are near-duplicates, and filters create thousands of URLs that search engines crawl instead of the pages that matter.
- Specs as text, not only as PDFs. Ranges, materials, dimensions and approvals in the HTML, so search engines and AI answers can read them. Keep the PDF as a download.
- One page per part number that someone searches for, with a unique description, and a clear parent page for each product family.
- Filters under control. Google’s guidance on faceted navigation: block filter URLs you don’t need indexed, and return a 404 when a filter has no results.
- Product structured data on part pages, so the name, part number and key properties are machine-readable.
- Datasheets and CAD without a form. Engineers value them highly, and a form loses those who aren’t ready to talk.
Technical content engineers trust
Engineers read the way they work: they look for numbers, conditions and limits. Industry-specific content earns trust when it is written with your engineers and shows what a generic page can’t.
- Numbers with units and test conditions, not adjectives.
- Application notes that show a real problem, the constraint and the result.
- Limits stated plainly: what you don’t make, and the tolerances you can’t hold.
- A named engineer as author or reviewer, and a date.
This is also what AI answers quote. When ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews compare suppliers, pages with specific, checkable facts are the ones they can use.
Measuring SEO in RFQs
- Visibility for the target pages: impressions and clicks in Search Console, grouped by page type.
- Qualified RFQs from organic search, agreed with sales: fit with capabilities, volume and lead time.
- Quote-to-order rate for those RFQs, which shows whether SEO brings the right work.
- Orders and revenue by source in the CRM, read by quarter because sales cycles are long.
Leads alone mislead. A page that brings ten small, off-spec requests looks better in a lead report than one that brings a single quote worth a year of work.
How we run SEO for manufacturers
A free search potential map
Which parts, processes and applications buyers search for in your markets, who wins those searches today, and whether your site can compete.
A page plan
The capability, application and part pages worth building first, ranked by demand and by the work you want more of.
Technical and catalog fixes
Crawling, filters, duplicate part pages, specs locked in PDFs and structured data.
Content with your engineers
Interviews and reviews, so every page carries the numbers and limits buyers check.
Reporting in RFQs and orders
Organic RFQs followed to quotes and orders, with what we recommend next.
You can start with one product line or one market. SEO on its own is a complete engagement. The website, paid search and AI search can follow if they’re the next bottleneck.
Manufacturing SEO questions
Is SEO worth it for manufacturers?
Yes, when buyers search for what you make. Industrial searches are specific and low in volume, but one RFQ can be a large order. Check the demand first, then build the pages it supports.
How long does SEO take for an industrial company?
Technical fixes and new pages are usually indexed within weeks. Rankings for competitive capability terms take several months. RFQs and orders then follow your own sales cycle.
Should we compete with Thomasnet and other directories?
Directories win broad supplier searches. Your own pages can win the specific ones: a material, a tolerance, an application or a part number. Keep your directory listings accurate, and link them to those pages.
Can SEO work with distributors?
Yes. Part pages can send buyers to distributors with tagged “Where to buy” links, and organic visits to those pages can be matched to the sales distributors report back.
